Geography and Urban Studies

Department of Geography

N430 Ross Building
Tel.: 416-736-5107
Program Description:

In a world where over 50 per cent of the population lives in urban areas, cities play a significant role in shaping the social, cultural, economic, political and environmental conditions of everyday life. Urbanization is a global process, but it also creates intensely heterogeneous places. People, power, money, information, ideas, commodities and traffic all flow through cities creating different spatial expressions in the urban landscape. A critical examination of cities investigates the shared characteristics of diverse urban places and the complex ways in which global issues play out as local communities struggle over resources, services and public spaces. The Department of Geography offers a BA Specialized Honours degree in Geography and Urban Studies for students who wish to focus on the most important challenges facing urban areas and the policy strategies needed to build economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable cities in the future.
