Awards & Bursaries

The following is a list of LA&PS faculty-wide awards available to LA&PS students. Most awards involve an application process and some are awarded through nominations. The award deadlines change throughout the year so please check back often.

Additional York University awards are available and you may search them online. The awards listed below are available only to LA&PS Undergraduate students.

Arthur Francis Williams Entrance Award ($2,000 x 2 years)

Continuing Students

Beverly Margaret Reynolds Scholarship ($850)
Established to honour the late Beverley Margaret Reynolds, York employee and alumna, this scholarship will be awarded to a student who has completed at least 30 credits with a minimum cumulative GPA of 7.00 (B+) and who has completed 12 credits in courses related to third world studies. Preference will be given to students who are actively involved in community service as evidenced by a letter of reference.

To apply, please submit a letter that indicates courses completed related to third world studies and outlines community service as well as the letter of reference to the Office of Associate Dean, attention Lynn Moynihan, Administrative Secretary via email to moynihan@yorku.ca.

Chantel Dunn Memorial Award ($1,000)
This award will be given to an undergraduate student in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies who demonstrates leadership in making a difference in African-Canadian communities. The recipient of this award must be be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or protected persons, residents of Ontario and must demonstrate financial need. This award is in memory of Chantel Dunn, a second year student who was a driven individual, striving for excellence in her studies with dreams to pursue a career in law. Chantel was fatally wounded on February 7, 2006; a victim of gun violence.

To apply, please submit a Student Financial Profile and submit the written statement outlining your involvement as a leader in the African Canadian community to the Office of the Associate Dean, Students, attention Lynn Moynihan, Administrative Secretary via email to moynihan@yorku.ca. A letter of reference must also be submitted. Students with disabilities have the option of submitting a paper application. Paper copies of the application are available at any of the disabilities service providers on campus.

George Hopton Award ($600)
This Award is intended to recognize and encourage students with special needs or circumstances. It is awarded to a Liberal Arts & Professional Studies student who is pursuing his/her first degree, completed at least 18 York credits (six credits of which should be a general education course) with a minimum overall grade point average of 7.00 and majoring in any of the following fields: Humanities, Religious Studies, Social Science, Sociology, Social Work, Women's Studies. Preference will be given to a student who: demonstrates financial need; is the first in their family to attend a university; has a permanent disability or is aboriginal.

Louise Jacobs Jamaican Scholarship ($300)
Awarded to a student who has completed at least 30 credits in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies with a minimum grade point average of 7.00 (B+). Applicants must submit a personal letter outlining their academic progress and community activities. Preference will be given to a student active in the Jane and Finch community. Established in honour of Louise Jacobs who retired in 1999 after having served the community for many years.

To apply, please submit a personal letter outlining community activities along with at least one letter of reference from a relevant community leader or advocate to the Office of Associate Dean, Students, attention Lynn Moynihan, Administrative Secretary via email to moynihan@yorku.ca.

Malcolm Streete Memorial Scholarship ($2,000)
An award will be given to a student in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies, majoring in political science, criminology or law and society, who has completed at least 24 (and no more than 60) credits and has a cumulative grade point average of 7.00 or higher. To be eligible a student must be able to demonstrate community involvement in the Jane-Finch, Oakwood or Regent Park communities. Preference will be given to students with black African or Afro-Caribbean heritage.

Call for Nominations for Student Leadership Awards

The Office of the Associate Dean, Students invites members of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies to submit nominations for student leadership awards. The deadline to submit nominations is Thursday March 31, 2016.  Questions should be directed to Lynn Moynihan, S950 Ross Building, 416-736-2100 x 70790 or via email at moynihan@yorku.ca.

The awards are as follows:

Outstanding Student Leadership Award
The Outstanding Student Leadership Award honours student leaders in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies for exceptional contribution to an undergraduate student association in the Faculty. It recognizes outstanding achievement in enhancing the quality of the undergraduate student experience through leadership, commitment and innovation. Normally three awards are given out each year, valued at $300.

Application process: Students may self-nominate, or be nominated by members of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies community. Each nomination should include a letter outlining the candidate's contributions to a student association and involvement in the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies, up to three supporting letters with at least one from a faculty or staff member, as well as a copy of the candidate's CV.

Outstanding Student Volunteer Award
This award is given to two Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies students who have distinguished themselves in the areas of volunteer contributions, service and leadership. The award honours a student's contributions towards enhancing the York community and making it a better place to learn, work and grow. The value of each award is $250.

Application process: Students may self-nominate or be nominated by members of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies community. Each nomination should include a letter outlining the candidate's contributions, up to two supporting letters with at least one from a faculty or staff member, as well a a copy of the candidate's CV.

Call for Nominations for LA&PS Student Association Awards

The Office of the Associate Dean, Students and the Centre for Student Success invites members of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies to submit nominations for student association awards. Outstanding Overall Contribution to Student Experience Award

The Outstanding Overall Contribution to Student Experience Award is awarded to a Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies student association in recognition of its outstanding contribution to the enrichment of the undergraduate student experience in their Department or School of affiliation, as well as in the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies. The award is valued at $250.

Application process: Associations may self-nominate or be nominated by members of the Faculty of Liberal Arts and Professional Studies community. Each nomination should include a letter outlining the association's contributions to the enrichment of the undergraduate student experience, up to three supporting letters with at least one from a faculty or staff member, as well as a report of the association's activities for the current academic year.

Alumni Awards

Alumni Award For Outstanding Contribution to Student Experience (York Alumnus)
A certificate of recognition is presented to LA&PS alumni who continue to give back to the York community since having graduated from the Faculty. Recipients will have enhanced student experience by active engagement in the Faculty, either inside or outside of the classroom or through involvement with a student association.
