Summer Institutes Abroad

In addition to our YorkU Summer Abroad Courses, students can participate in partner summer school programs through a Letter of Permission (LOP). Please note: to ensure your Letter of Permission request is processed in time for the Spring/Summer term, applications should be sent at least six weeks prior to the first day of enrolment.

Funding is available from the Faculty of LA&PS for up to $2,000 towards the program fee for studying at one of the five summer institutes below.

Up to three students attending each institution will be eligible to receive the LA&PS Award of up to $2,000.

Students should take advantage of the opportunity to take at least two courses at their chosen institution, with preference being given to 2nd, 3rd or 4th year students with a minimum GPA of 5.0.  Other criteria may also be applicable.

University of Leeds, England

With a global ranking within the top 100, the University of Leeds is one of the most reputable institutions in the world. Its reputation is underlined as a bona fide Russell Group University in the UK, confirming its status as one of the top providers of post-secondary education in the United Kingdom.

Leeds International Summer School (LISS) offers students the opportunity to immerse themselves in British Culture as part of a four-week program.  Students will be able to take advantage of the vibrant, student friendly city of Leeds, and the rich history, culture and natural beauty of the area, the school combines world-class tuition with local knowledge, academic field trips and a wide variety of social trips.

University of Tampere, Finland

The University of Tampere (UTA) is a culturally-committed higher education institution.  With its six faculties and some 15, 000 degree students, UTA is one of the largest and most popular universities in Finland.

Tampere Summer School offers over 30 inspiring courses covering a range of academic fields and up to date topics.  The Summer School is open for students from all around the world.

Students will also have the opportunity to enjoy social events and explore the city in their free time.  Tampere is a vibrant city, with a relaxed atmosphere, and the beautiful lake surroundings display the amazing Finnish nature at its best.

  • Cost - Program Fee €1,600, includes tuition and accommodation.
  • Accommodation - Hostel accommodation
  • Duration - 2 weeks, 1 August to 16 August 2019
  • Academic Credit - 10 ECTS Credits/5 US Credits – 6 York Credits

Maynooth University, Ireland

Study at Ireland’s fastest growing university.  Located 25km outside of Dublin, Maynooth University is an internationally recognized university ranked in the global top 100 universities in the world that are under 50 years old.

Maynooth offers an international summer school where you will be able to study with students from all over the world.

  • Cost - Program Fee €3,245, includes tuition, accommodation, breakfast, field trips, airport transfers at set times, day trips around Ireland and All Ireland Heritage Pass.
  • Accommodation - Single room on campus.
  • Duration - 4 weeks, 6 July to 3 August 2019
  • Academic Credit - 2 courses worth 10-15 ECTS Credits/6 US Credits - 6 York credits
  • Courses - Choose two courses from a diverse range of courses.

Hanyang University, South Korea

Study at one of the leading private research universities in South Korea at Hanyang University, located conveniently in the heart of the capital city Seoul.

The campus sits atop a small hill with a great view of the surrounding area, whilst being situated along the nearby ChongRyang Stream and close to Seoul Forest Park.

Hanyang offers an international summer school where you will be able to study with students from all over the world.

  • Cost - Program Fee 2,500,000 KRW (Approx $2, 900), includes tuition, accommodation, and some activities.
  • Accommodation - On or Off campus available.
  • Duration - 4 weeks, 1 July to 26 July 2019
  • Academic Credit - Study up two to three courses worth 3 US Credits each - 6 - 9 York credits
  • Courses - Choose up to three courses from a diverse range of courses.

University of Cape Town, South Africa

Study in Cape Town, at South Africa’s oldest university and also one of Africa’s leading teaching and research institutions.

The university offers a short-term summer program that offers students from across the globe an exciting opportunity to study important issues in diverse subject areas, to develop an understanding of South African society, and to experience Cape Town in a unique and unforgettable way

The program includes field trips and excursions, encouraging community engagement and promote a lasting impression of the classroom curriculum.

  • Cost - Program Fee $3, 600 (USD), includes tuition, accommodation, breakfast, field trips, program transportation and selected other meals.
  • Accommodation - On-campus
  • Duration - 4 weeks, June 17 to July 12 2019
  • Academic Credit - 2 courses worth 12 ECT Credits/6 US Credits - 6 York credits
  • Courses -Two courses, Afropolitanism and Social Justice and Entrepreneurship.

 

York University, Costa Rica

Study up to 15 credits at a satellite campus of York University in Las Nubes, Costa Rica.

The Las Nubes Project mission is to contribute to community well-being in ways that are compatible and conducive to environmental conservation. Las Nubes delivers this through faculty and student research, environmental education, and through community engagement initiatives.

By means of the Project's permanent and long-term presence and relationship with local communities and organizations, Las Nubes aims to develop a grounded theory and praxis around the sustainability of healthy and gratifying rural lifeways respectful of, and in harmony with the natural environment.
